Tai chi is a traditional Chinese martial art that has been practiced by millions for over 400 years. Tai chi can be considered an exercise program or a form of self-defense, but it's most often seen as a low-impact activity that's enjoyable and easy to learn. Tai Chi Zero is an upcoming film about the legendary Chen Changcsu and his lifelong quest for inner peace. The movie features Chen Changcsu battling with the country's new, modernizing government and struggling to maintain his place in history... while also teaching newcomers how to perform tai chi through song and dance. Regarded as the "founding father" of tai chi, Chen Changcsu (played by Tony Leung Chiu Wai) rose to international stardom during the early years of the Republic of China. He was selected over his peers by over a thousand artisans who were asked to submit their artistic styles for consideration. Instead, he submitted his own style, which became known as tai chi chuan ("formidable fist"). Chen Changcsu also learned chinese calligraphy and poetry, becoming an eloquent speaker. With a deep love for the Chinese history and personages, he collected books and preserved many of his handwritten works. In 1929, while Chen was at Yale studying the Tao Te Ching, the Nationalist Party came to power and began looking for an ideological weapon to exploit in their fight against the communists. They seized upon Chen Changcsu's "Tai Chi Chuan" as a symbol of this new loyalty to traditional culture. In 1934, Chen Changcsu returned from America full of ideas about modernizing China, but was immediately imprisoned by the new regime. Finally freed in 1936, he was subsequently exiled to Hong Kong under British rule. In Hong Kong, he continued to teach his martial art to the government's intelligence officers and formed a nationalistic, patriotic organization known as the Lianhuanhua Movement. In December 1941, Chen Changcsu escaped from Hong Kong to Macao where he continued his life, teaching and writing about traditional culture. During this time he also wrote a memoir of his life entitled "The Tai Chi Classics". In 1949, after the communists took control of mainland China, Chen Changcsu once again returned to Taiwan. He resumed his teaching activity in Taichung and at Taiwan National University where he was named Dean of Physical Education until 1960 when he left against the government's wishes and moved permanently to California. In 1966, he was named honorary chairman of the Sunflower Association and continued to teach in Los Angeles until his death in 1971. In addition to Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Liu Yifei plays Chen's granddaughter Zhang Yue, while Donnie Yen plays a retired general who teaches Chen's grandnephew Chang Lu. Tai Chi Zero is a co-production between Warner Bros. and DreamWorks Animation Studios released on March 26, 2012. It had a production budget of , with additional funding from China Film Group Corporation and China Film Corp., which helps make the film more "militaristic". cfa1e77820
